Thomas Tatzl

Austrian bass-baritone Thomas Tatzl started the 2016-17 season singing Paulus by Mendelssohn under Cornelius Meister in Antwerp and Gent, Mozart-Requiem in Milan and Beethoven´s Symphony No. 9 in Bari. On opera stage he was performing Ford in Falstaff and Conte in Le nozze di Figaro at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Papageno in Mozart´s Magic Flute at the Teatro

Regio Torino and Guglielmo in Mozart’s Così fan tutte in Ravenna, Novara and Piacenza. Past concerts are Christ in Bach’s St Matthew Passion with Collegium Vocale Gent and Philippe Herreweghe, Fauré-Requiem with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic under James Gaffigan, Das klagende Lied by Mahler with the Orchestra RAI in Torino and Mozart’s Mass in C minor with the MDR Orchestra Leipzig. In the 2017/18 season he will have his debut at the Vienna State Opera performing Papageno in Magic Flute and debut at the Bavarian State Opera as Harlekin in Ariadne on Naxos.

In the 2015-16 season Thomas was performing Papageno in Mozart’s Zauberflöte at Teatro La Fenice and at Theater Basel. He sang Beethoven´s Mass in C major with Le Concert Olympique at deSingel in Antwerp and Bruges, Die Schöpfung under Riccardo Muti in Ravenna, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Sir Antonio Pappano in Rome, concerts in Milan with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi of Berlioz’ Lelio. In summer 2016 he sang Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro in the National Centre for the Performing Arts Beijing.

Thomas could also establish himself as a Lieder singer. He performed at the Schubertiade in Hohenems, the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival, the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, the Music Society Steiermark and the “Amici della Musica” in Padua. Thomas Tatzl started the 2014-15 season with two house debuts singing Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at Oper Köln and with the world première of Mauricio Sotelo’s El Público at Teatro Real in Madrid under Pablo Heras-Casado singing the role of Hombre primero. He could also be heard as Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma. Further projects also included concerts of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis under Ingo Metzmacher in Tokyo with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah with Vokal Nord and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra in Tromsø, Norway, the St. Matthew Passion with the Bach Choir Mainz in Frankfurt and Mainz, Haydn’s Missa in tempore belli at the Tyrol Festival in Toblach, Beethoven´s Christus am Ölberge and Spohr´s Die letzten Dinge in Graz with the Grazer Instrumentalisten.

Mr. Tatzl opened the 2013-14 season singing Papageno in a new production of Die Zauberflöte under Christian Arming at Teatro Regio Torino. He sang Schubert’s Mass in E-flat major at the Philharmonie in Berlin and at the Prinzregentertheater in Munich with the RIAS Kammerchor and the Münchener Kammerorchester conducted by Alexander Liebreich and the Mozart Requiem in Salzburg.

Moreover, Thomas Tatzl was invited to sing for the Opening Gala of the Grafenegg Festival 2014 under Andrés Orozco-Estrada with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Austria.

Among his major achievements in the previous seasons are his debuts at Maggio Musicale Firenze as Collatinus in Britten’s The Rape Of Lucretia and at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia singing Papageno. As part of the ensemble of the Zurich Opera House, he sang Happy in Puccini’s La Fanciulla Del West, 5.Erscheinung in Pfitzner’s Palestrina under Ingo Metzmacher, Don Juan inJanáček’s From the House of the Dead (under the baton of Ingo Metzmacher and in a production by Peter Konwitschny), Silvano in Verdi’s Un Ballo In Maschera, and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte for children. In the summer of 2012 he celebrated his debut at the Salzburg Festival, where he performed in Peter von Winter’s Das Labyrinth, conducted by Ivor Bolton, and as Papageno in concert with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. In the same season he also made his house debut at the Philharmonie in Berlin singing Spohr’s Oratorio Die letzten Dinge with the Philharmonischer Chor Berlin and the Staatskappelle Halle under the baton of Jörg-Peter Weigle.

Thomas Tatzl has also established himself as a concert singer, with recent engagements including Mozart’s Requiem under Laurence Equilbey with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in Norway, Austria and Germany. He sang Haydn’s Creation in Norway, the St John Passion in Milan and Beethoven’s Symphony Nr. 9 on tour in Germany, at the Tonhalle Zurich, KKL Lucerne and in Madrid at the Auditorio Nacional de Música under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos.

Born in the Steiermark, Austria, Thomas Tatzl received his first voice lessons from Sigried Rennert and subsequently began his vocal studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He then continued at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and worked with Karlheinz Hanser. During the 2009-10 season, Thomas Tatzl completed his lieder and opera studies with distinction. Already during his studies, Thomas was invited to sing Nanni in Haydn’s L´Infedeltà Delusa at Monte Carlo Opera, as well as in Lille, Bilbao, Valladolid, Luxembourg and the music festival Bremen. Shortly after he sang the title role in Mozart’s Le Nozze Di Figaro at the Opera Festival Klosterneuburg.

Thomas Tatzl was a finalist and award winner of the following competitions: “Das Lied – International Song Competition” in Berlin (2011), “Richard Tauber – International Competition » in London (2010), “Concorso di cantanti lirici” in Spoleto (2009), as well as the “Zadek-Gesangswettbewerb” (2009) in Vienna. He was awarded a scholarship by the Hildegard-Zadek-Society and received the Award of Appreciation from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
